The Heidi Horten Collection is pleased to announce the first edition of its Art Historian in Residence programme. The residency offers art historians residing outside Vienna, as well as international applicants, the opportunity to engage intensively with aspects of the permanent exhibition KLIMT – WARHOL during a one-month stay in Vienna.
Residency Period: October 2026
The aim of the residency is to facilitate independent art historical research related to the permanent exhibition KLIMT – WARHOL. Possible projects may include:
• Research on one or more works from the permanent collection of the Heidi Horten Collection
• An art historical analysis or critical review
• The development of an essay or scholarly article
• Contextual research on artists, groups of works, or collection-related themes
The outcome of the residency should take the form of a written text and may, upon agreement, be published through the Heidi Horten Collection’s channels or presented as part of a public talk.
Conditions
• Duration: 1 month (01.10. – 31.10.2026)
• Accommodation: MuseumsQuartier Vienna
• Research focus: Works from the permanent exhibition KLIMT – WARHOL at the Heidi Horten Collection
• Outcome: Short written contribution / research text
The residency is open to art historians holding at least a Bachelor’s degree or a higher academic qualification, with demonstrated research experience and a clearly articulated interest in the permanent exhibition.
Application requirements
Application materials may be submitted in English or German and should include:
• Biography / CV
• Portfolio presenting previous art historical work and research
• Project proposal outlining the intended research within the framework of the Heidi Horten Collection
• Relevant publications or writing samples (maximum 2 pages); optional: links to websites, videos, audio materials, press coverage, etc.
• Letter of recommendation from a professor, lecturer, or academic supervisor

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed by an internal jury of the Heidi Horten Collection.
Selection criteria include:
• Quality and clarity of the proposed research project
• Relevance to the collection and permanent exhibition
• Academic and research experience of the applicant
The successful applicant will be notified on Friday, 31.07.2026.
What the Heidi Horten Collection provides
• Free accommodation in a residential studio for the duration of the residency. The studios are located within the MuseumsQuartier Vienna.
• Residency stipend of € 1.300,- for the one-month stay
• Travel grant: € 300,- flat-rate contribution for residents of EU countries, € 500,- flat-rate contribution for residents of non-EU countries
Responsibilities of the Art Historian in Residence
• Independent organisation of travel to and from Vienna
• Independent organisation of visa requirements. Selected participants will receive an official invitation letter but are responsible for obtaining any necessary visa or residence permit for Austria.
• Mandatory presence for at least 80% of the residency period
• Personal responsibility for travel and health insurance
