The exhibition *Focus Franz West* is dedicated to the multifaceted work of Austrian artist Franz West, who challenges traditional notions of artistic genres and reinterprets them in a humorous way. West’s artistic universe is extensive: in addition to drawings, collages, posters, and videos, his work is characterized above all by pieces that embrace the principle of participation and an expanded concept of sculpture.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is a new acquisition for the collection: Franz West’s 9-part Biennale cycle from 1990, which offers an ironic perspective on the dialogue between the artwork and the viewer. The cycle emerged as a continuation of the previously created “Passstücke”—wearable sculptures that make the viewer an integral part of the artwork and are conceived as a temporary extension of the body. The presentation is complemented by additional works from the collection, including a “Passstück” and a work on paper. Loans from private collections further enrich the exhibition. These works, including additional “Passstücke” and amorphous sculptures, illustrate West’s innovative approach to blurring the boundaries between art and life.
The exhibition invites visitors to discover and experience Franz West’s unique understanding of sculpture.
